Anish I love the way you write your articles, especially this article explaining the nuances of SEO. I will implement some on my blog Quickprepper and see how this works out. Btw, I was inspired by you and created this blog, Wish me luck

Bhanu Pratap Kaushik Hi Neil,An awesome post as always. You haven’t mentioned scholarship links in this (although it is mentioned in some other post by you), which is also a great method to rank low and medium competitive keywords. Plus, how much time do your editors take to edit your content and make it perfect for the audience. I mean, one does not want to switch off while reading your post. Quite intriguing! You have definitely hacked the art of attraction through your writing. Kudos!Reply

@Alexey – Nice pick up on salesforce.com. I had never even seen that nifty (yeah, I just used the word, “nifty”) little JQuery slider they’re using to hide a crapload of content and keywords. My guess is their “Popular Search Phrases” would get a lesser brand banned/penalized. Reply

This is pretty straight forward. You can reach out to bloggers and ask them to review your product. They’re usually eager to accept, since everyone likes free stuff. However, since you’re giving an incentive, it’s possible for it to be considered a paid link.

Microsites are no secret. They have been abused in every way imaginable. However, I will say that the most benefit I’ve seen gained from them is splitting them up by niche for local services. For example, a law firm having one site for their divorce services and then another for personal injury. This allows you to focus on specific areas for each site.

Black Hat SEO: Is It Really as Evil as They Say? - York SEO

Black Hat SEO tactics are disapproved practices that increase page rankings in a SERP by going against that search engine’s terms of service. Black Hat techniques range from keyword stuffing, using unrelated keywords in page content, and invisible text to doorway pages, page swapping, redirects and content automation.

Jason, I was primarily referring to if you’re doing it with several hundred or thousand pages. It would be impossible to put them in the navigation in a way that makes sense. If it’s just a few pages, then there’s no real harm. -Peter Reply

Following the rise and eventual decline of the full disclosure vs. anti-sec “golden era”—and the subsequent growth of an “ethical hacking” philosophy—the term grey hat began to take on all sorts of diverse meanings. The prosecution in the U.S. of Dmitry Sklyarov for activities which were legal in his home country changed the attitudes of many security researchers. As the Internet became used for more critical functions, and concerns about terrorism grew, the term “white hat” started referring to corporate security experts who did not support full disclosure.

The term began to be used in the late 1990s, derived from the concepts of “white hat” and “black hat” hackers. When a white hat hacker discovers a vulnerability, they will exploit it only with permission and not divulge its existence until it has been fixed, whereas the black hat will illegally exploit it and/or tell others how to do so. The grey hat will neither illegally exploit it, nor tell others how to do so.

Content, content. It’s the kingpin of the internet and all SEO efforts. We mentioned text spinners before and whilst a small proportion of these can be effective, it’s still a very dodgy idea to use them. To illustrate, I’m going to take some of the text from this article and put it into a free, online text spinner to show you the results.

In addition to that, there seems to be a direct correlation with the content that I spend the most time on, and the number of links it naturally attracts. Matt Cutts would say “well, duh!” to something like that, but I guess I just had to figure it out for myself. The content I’ve created on this site that has naturally garnered the most attention is stuff like my SEO Checklist, my walkthrough on How to Pass the Google Analytics Individual Qualification (GAIQ) Test, and my post on how I generated more than $20,000 in 8 days after running a promotion with AppSumo.

We get a clearer look at what is considered white hat, grey hat and even black hat SEO tactics when we consult an infographic called Black Hat vs. White Hat SEO, presented by Cognitive SEO. If you have ever wondered what the differences are, and how you can prevent your site from being blacklisted from search engines, this infographic will tell you exactly what to do and what to stay away from. Staying within white hat SEO tactics is always the best. There is plenty of creativity to utilize when you stay within white hat SEO. Not only that, but you will also find it has way more impact and can sometimes even yield faster results.

Neil, I see you do not use meta description or alt image tags in your blog. Is there a specific reason why you are doing that, as all seo books I have read say those are two important on page seo tactics that can improve your ranking.

There are two forms of black hat SEO. It can get very confusing because they are never really clearly separated by definition. Also, depending on which space or vertical you work in, both forms of black hat SEO can mean very, very different things.

He is a New York Times best selling author. The Wall Street Journal calls him a top influencer on the web, Forbes says he is one of the top 10 marketers, and Entrepreneur Magazine says he created one of the 100 most brilliant companies. He was recognized as a top 100 entrepreneur under the age of 30 by President Obama and a top 100 entrepreneur under the age of 35 by the United Nations.

Other Grey Hat Techniques Some grey hat techniques are almost as old as the Internet itself. For example, you might purchase customer email addresses from a third-party, such as a supermarket or department store, so that you can send unsolicited messages. Another technique is “greenwashing,” such as when your company purchases hybrid vehicles so that you can call your company a green, or environmentally friendly, business.

In this industry, there’s a spectrum. We call good SEO “white hat” and bad SEO “black hat”. White hat SEO would be stuff like making sure your pages are indexing, writing great content and titling your blog posts with keyword query volume factored in. Black hat SEO would be stuff like hacking sites to place links, buying expired domains and redirecting them to your site, or keyword stuffing your content and designing it for search engines rather than users (if you would be embarrassed to read your content out loud to a friend, you’re doing something wrong).

Providing pages with proper titles and Meta data is vital in SEO. Previously, Meta description and Meta keywords elements were so misused that Search Engines now regard them as less important. They are still useful if used properly. Title of anything is an acknowledgment as to what the content might be, so make sure that you use true representation of your page content. HTML optimization and Effective Keyword Use Create your website with appropriate keywords and key phrases. Use those keywords and key phrases you’ve identified effectively throughout your website. Which are:

White-hat SEO thrives in creative, social content. White-hat tactics usually comprise content marketing, genuine connections with other sites owners, and a proactive and engaging relationship with your audience/customer base through social media. White-hat SEO also involves technical aspects of your website such as accurate Meta data and tags.  White-hat SEO requires time and patience, but it is certainly the safest and most effective strategy.

When it comes to the crunch, whether gray hat methods are used is up to the individual. However, if they are going to be used it has to be hoped that the SEO practitioner is very skilled. Even then, there’s risk involved, so in order to be absolutely safe in the knowledge that a site won’t be penalized, it’s best to stick to white hat practices.

While I’m not proud of it, I’m not going to remove any of these bad links going forward. Instead, I’m working on continuing to generate really good, high quality links through better content. My posts on Social Media Today and SEOMoz are still some of my strongest links to date:

White hats drive in the right lane, while the black Lamborghini is getting pulled over and given a ticket for speeding 50 mph over the limit in the fast lane. Granted, it’s quite possible that Lamborghini may never get that ticket as you’re watching it zoom by, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a cop just a few miles up the road waiting with a radar gun.

A great article indeed, I would like to suggest that, though spun articles still work, but they should have some grammar and should make some sense. Spelling mistakes and bad grammar will harm your visitors and ranking as well.
