The irony was that for black hats, this interpretation was seen as a derogatory term; whereas amongst white hats it was a term that lent a sense of popular notoriety.

Yassin, As I stated in the post, I don’t necessarily recommend doing any of these without some tweaking. My primary reason for interest in these methods is incase a friend or client comes to me that has been using these methods. That way I have an understanding of what did and didn’t work and how to fix any issues. -Peter Reply
@Alexey – Nice pick up on salesforce.com. I had never even seen that nifty (yeah, I just used the word, “nifty”) little JQuery slider they’re using to hide a crapload of content and keywords. My guess is their “Popular Search Phrases” would get a lesser brand banned/penalized. Reply
However, many SEO experts use these techniques as a way to boost client rankings. If done properly, and responsibly, gray hat methods can manipulate search engine rules without actually breaking them.

Justin Neil, I see you do not use meta description or alt image tags in your blog. Is there a specific reason why you are doing that, as all seo books I have read say those are two important on page seo tactics that can improve your ranking.Reply
Ok, now that you have your list, go and check out the competition. The easiest way that I know to check this out is simply to use SerpIQ. It will give you a nice little “competition score” to let you know more or less how easy the competition is.
Many website owners disagree about what is the best way to perfect their website’s SEO. It all comes down to a strategy decision that could affect your website’s longevity and reputation. Some people believe that in order to succeed, you need to apply grey or even black hat SEO tactics. However, white hat SEO optimizers have a different opinion. White hat SEO tactics are always going to give you the most long term effects, and plenty of studies have shown that. What is the real difference between white hat, grey hat and black hat SEO? It’s quite easy really. White hat is everything that is considered “legal” by search engines. That could be everything from keyword tags to content optimizing. When it comes to black hat and grey hat, it’s a little bit different. Black hat are SEO tactics that involve keyword stuffing, hidden texts and of course link farms and scraping. The latter is a form of content stealing which happens to pretty much every major website or blog.Endeavoring into black hat SEO is dangerous, and it will most likely end with your website being banned from search engines altogether. White hat SEO tactics have a better impact and tell search engines that you mean business in a professional way. What one should also remember is that paid links are also included into search engine’s no-go SEO tactics. If a search engine finds out you have purchased a link, your site could potentially be banned from indexing as well.We get a clearer look at what is considered white hat, grey hat and even black hat SEO tactics when we consult an infographic called Black Hat vs. White Hat SEO, presented by Cognitive SEO. If you have ever wondered what the differences are, and how you can prevent your site from being blacklisted from search engines, this infographic will tell you exactly what to do and what to stay away from. Staying within white hat SEO tactics is always the best. There is plenty of creativity to utilize when you stay within white hat SEO. Not only that, but you will also find it has way more impact and can sometimes even yield faster results. The Difference Between Black, Grey & White Hat SEO Tactics
And if you make small changes too often, Google might see it as suspicious activity and penalize you. It’s also not 100% guaranteed, so there’s some risk here.
This goes hand in hand with the method above. You should uniquely write the content for every page even if it’s several thousands of pages. However, well done merge text and spun content do still work. Yes, even after panda. The thing you need to keep in mind is the more pages your using this type of content on, the bigger risk you’re taking. A bot spitting out a few hundred pages of content has a low risk of duplication. However, when you make that several thousand, the chances increase dramatically.
Gray Hat SEO is all about risk versus reward. Some Gray Hat techniques may be frowned by the search engines, but are not necessarily against their rules, while other techniques may be more risky and should be used only after careful consideration.
Content, content. It’s the kingpin of the internet and all SEO efforts. We mentioned text spinners before and whilst a small proportion of these can be effective, it’s still a very dodgy idea to use them. To illustrate, I’m going to take some of the text from this article and put it into a free, online text spinner to show you the results.
Gray hat tactics may get you in trouble, but then again, they might not. And sometimes, that’s a risk that’s worthwhile to take.
I know all these questions have been addressed in this or that article, like in my discussion with Ken Krogue in his Forbes piece or in the latest letter by Senator John D. Rockefeller to Matt Cutts about SERPs and moving companies. Yet why is there so much confusion about search engine optimization? In an attempt to clear things up, let’s take a basic look at SEO ethics with some terms and definitions.
In this blog, we will explain the best tip, trick, and technique which you can use to optimize your content. Although updating a few meta tags do not guarantee to be a top place in google search but at least it’s the first step you should take.
I’m referring primarily to grey hat techniques. These are techniques that can give you a slight advantage, but may not follow Google’s guidelines 100%. This means there could be some risk involved, albeit a low one. These are not to be confused with black hat techniques, which can give you an even greater competitive edge, but carry a very large risk.
Like anything in life, taking shortcuts to get you where you want to be right now is often the path to failure. Great SEO, good content and a well-planned out business, that’s what will give your site the competitive edge in the end.
