As mentioned above, the presence of structured markup can be essential for some online businesses (e-commerce sites, for example). Some developers are aware of this, so they have integrated schema markup code into their themes. But even if your theme doesn’t have built-in schema support, there are many WordPress plug-ins – Schema, for example – that solve the problem for good.
Your pages don’t load as fast as they should because the images aren’t properly optimized. Open a website page, and then press the Print Screen key (Windows) or Command + Shift + 3 (Mac). Then, paste the clipboard image into your favorite graphics editor and measure the width of the actual content.
Outdated content makes your site look stale from both an algorithm and user perspective. You can delete or use a 301 redirect (this sends users to the new URL, which is time-consuming) for old content, but your best option is to refurbish it. Refurbishing old content keeps the page fresh and improves its quality because you’re giving it a new feel with a modern perspective.
If you don’t have something interesting to write about, well… don’t write anything. Better wait a few more days or weeks, jot down as many ideas as possible, and then write a fantastic content piece. Tools like Buzzsumo can help you find the most shared, industry-related articles.
SEO techniques can be classified into two broad categories: techniques that search engines recommend as part of good design, and those techniques of which search engines do not approve. The search engines attempt to minimize the effect of the latter, among them spamdexing. Industry commentators have classified these methods, and the practitioners who employ them, as either white hat SEO, or black hat SEO. White hats tend to produce results that last a long time, whereas black hats anticipate that their sites may eventually be banned either temporarily or permanently once the search engines discover what they are doing.
Make sure to connect before sending a message. After they accept, send them a brief message, not a pitch! If they’re interested, they will respond.
But it all makes sense – Content first, search engine second. The future of S.E.O in my opition will depend on who keeps visitors longest on their website. It will not be enough to get them there but more to keep them longer, ie. Quality content.
Your website visitors have a much shorter attention span these days, so don’t ignore interactive content, highly visual content like infographics, videos, etc. This type of content will keep them loyal, making them return for more, and search engines like that.
Any image that’s wider than the content wastes server space and diminishes the website loading speed. Repeat the process for your “featured images” as well; it is much better to create properly sized images for them, rather than reuse the big images. For best results, use tools like RIOT to set the best image size/quality compromise.
According to this study from the Oxford Journal, “The goal of UX design in business is to improve customer satisfaction and loyalty through the utility, ease of use, and pleasure provided in the interaction with a product.” For our purposes, your website is the product. The objective is to first determine a user’s intent, then develop a methodology for smooth navigation—a methodology that evokes a positive emotion and leads to an overall good experience.
Thank you for this, timely for me, article. I love writing style as it keep engaged and learning. I especially liked the templates that you used. I hope you don’t mind but I am stealing them. Have a very great day!

This is akin to blowing up the sidewalk outside your competitors real world brick and mortar, but others see it as all part of the search game. Where you stand is all a matter of your ethics, but beware, some of it is highly illegal and could land you in jail if discovered.

Measure the performance of your social media channels. Keep track of your number of followers, fans, etc. Resist the temptation to buy them, though; Google can easily determine that your fans are fake, and not real people who post updates on a regular basis.
There was a time when a post could be a few hundred words and rank well. Though this is still true in some cases, top industry players have longer-form content. According to a serpIQ study, the average content length of the top 10 results on search engine results pages was more than 2,000 words.
Successful search optimization for international markets may require professional translation of web pages, registration of a domain name with a top level domain in the target market, and web hosting that provides a local IP address. Otherwise, the fundamental elements of search optimization are essentially the same, regardless of language.
If you have created a great piece of content, be sure to repurpose it into a video, a presentation, etc. Then, upload these new content pieces to the top video sharing sites, on SlideShare, etc.
It’s interesting, but my attitude about SEO has changed… I used to over-think it, trying to come up with the “right” number of times to use key words and phrases. Now I just encourage our writers to focus on bringing something of value to our users’ lives in every single post. I then look to see if I can improve on the title to make it both catchier and stickier. It seems to be working. Google just upped our page rank from a 4 to a 5 and traffic went from 280,000 to 500,000 visits and from 800,000 to 1.5 million pageviews a month.
For straight up link begging, I’ve found that something simple and straightforward works. My script is something like: “I found your list of resources. I also have a good one. It’d be great if you could add mine to the list”. There are a few tricks to make it more effective, but that’s the basic gist.
Excellent case study, Brian/Richard. I have bee blogging for a few years and just recently found out how important promotion really is. Like Derek Halpern says, “20% of your time should be focused on writing and 80% should be focused on promotion”.
I’m definitely in agreement with Samuel on this one. When a potential client asks me whether I do White hat, Grey hat, or Black hat SEO, I respond with “No Hat SEO”. Then of course, I go on to explain that I do what gets long-term results for my clients – by persuading trusted authority sites to link to the client website.
While there are many legitimate ways to optimize a site for search engines, some webmasters may utilize deceptive techniques to try and trick search engines and users. Legitimate SEO is often referred to as “whitehat,” while the more unsavory, illicit techniques are often called “blackhat.” It’s important to distinguish between the two methods since blackhat SEO actually damages your site and reputation, instead of improving its ranking in organic search results.
Use a CDN (content delivery network) to speed up your site. It’s a system that caches your website’s static content, storing it in a network of servers. Then, when people access your website, the desired pages are loaded from the servers that are closest to them. Cloudflare is one of the best CDN providers on the market, and they have a free plan that offers enough features for most people’s needs.
The bottom line is you don’t have to manage thousands or even 200 ranking signals in order to significantly increase organic traffic. Just focus on the areas mentioned above. If you do, it’s entirely possible to double, triple, or even 10X the traffic coming to your website in 2017.
Problems We Solve Despite spending 5 or 6 figures a year on marketing & sales, many companies tell us they aren’t getting the quality of leads and new customers they need to hit their targets. They say that they can’t afford to keep spending at this level without being able to directly connect marketing effort to sales results. We can’t help everyone. But if this issue is a priority for your company, we’d be happy to speak with you to learn enough about your situation to see if we can help.
Hi Tyler, well said and great article. Another element I’d like to add is the power of content repurposing. Once you’re, for example, publishing content regularly on your blog, the same content can be adapted and repurposed for multiple other formats, rather than starting from scratch each time.
Often times, people will build bad links to your site to hide their own affiliate links that are placed on the same low quality page. Others simply attack your website using negative SEO because it ranks better than theirs, making them lose clients.
Good question, Rob. This can definitely work for local businesses. But you’re right: it takes a slightly different approach. One of the hardest parts of doing outreach for brick and mortar business or large sites is finding the right person to get in touch with. If you dig deep you can usually find the right email address somewhere on the site. If not, I recommend using the general “contact us” page and asking them to forward your message to the right person.
Black hat SEO refers to techniques and strategies used to get higher search rankings, and breaking search engine rules. Black hat SEO focuses on only search engines and not so much a human audience. Black hat SEO is typically used by those who are looking for a quick return on their site, rather than a long-term investment on their site. Some techniques used in black hat SEO include: keyword stuffing, link farming, hidden texts and links, and blog content spamming. Consequences of black hat SEO can possibly result in your site being banned from a search engine and de-indexed as a penalization for using unethical techniques.
Black Hat SEO, on the other hand, as you might guess, is the exact opposite. Deception is often employed, using methods which are frowned upon by search engines and contrary to their guidelines in order to enhance a website’s rankings. Black Hat practices always get caught in the end.
Test if a certain keyword is profitable for SEO by running a small pay per click (PPC) campaign for it. Create a Google AdWords account, and then set up an AdWords campaign using your keyword list. Use conversion tracking and wait for a few days, until you gather enough data; then, examine the results and you will discover the set of winning keywords.
If you plan to launch a new site, the chapters of an Amazon bestseller, industry-related book can be used for your website’s categories. It’s a quick and effective way of planning your website structure and it works fine in any niche, provided that you pick the proper book.
Create dedicated pages for each targeted keyword, but don’t go overboard with it. If you target the “small business seo” keyword, for example, you should create a
Often times, SEO and reputation management are used together to boost client’s revenue. But how do you keep track of all the complaints? Fear not, for there’s a Complaints Search Results engine that does just that.
The key is to differentiate between what’s considered a press release and a blog post. It has to be newsworthy. Pro bono work, Donatitions, and Charity Events usually works best. New website launches would also work to a degree.
